Image DPI Checker
Upload an image to read its pixel dimensions and any DPI metadata it actually contains. If none exists, the tool says so instead of inventing a value.
No image chosen yet. Your file is decoded in this browser tab only and is never sent anywhere.
Privacy: images are decoded and processed only in your browser. They are not uploaded to any server, and temporary object URLs are revoked when you clear the tool.
How to use this calculator
1. Upload an image. 2. Read its pixel dimensions and any DPI metadata the file actually contains. 3. If no metadata is shown, that means the file contains none — use a print size to calculate effective DPI instead.
Formula
Metadata DPI is read from the file when present (PNG pHYs chunk or JPEG JFIF header). Effective DPI is always Pixels / Print size in inches.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my image show no DPI?
Many images, especially screenshots and web exports, simply contain no DPI metadata. The file still has pixel dimensions; DPI only appears once a print size is chosen.
Is metadata DPI the same as print DPI?
No. Metadata DPI is a label stored in the file. Effective print DPI is pixels divided by the physical size you print at.
